Month In Numbers | June 2013

I know I'm posting June's numbers just a little late, but what the heck, now is just as good a time as any, right? :)

Month In Numbers is a meme started by Julie Kirk over at Notes on Paper. You can see her thoughts and ideas on what you could include in your own Month In Numbers if you look here.

I have managed to keep up with month in numbers and have quite a nice stack of layouts now and I love to look back at them to help me create and provide inspiration for my new monthly numbers.

I plan to pull some papers together this week and start preparing the basic layout for the coming months so I am ahead of the game! Overall, I still believe that is what's kept me at it this year!

Alright, now on to June's numbers :)

After looking at June's numbers I can see they are mostly related to the weather and I really wanted to include the statistics on the flood the southern part of our province experienced.

I looked back at my photos and we were very busy with the yard and gardening, finding flowers and planting them.

I forgot to add that I have read "0" books, and it would appear July will end in a zero as well! That's okay, we are doing lots of other things that are just as fun and relaxing and I'm sure there will be plenty of time for reading in the coming months.

There you have it! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you are enjoying the last bits of July!

Our Summer thus far...

I thought I would share some photos with you on how our Summer is going... I'm sorry if you follow me on Instagram you will have seen most of these pictures already...

I went for a walk the other day near the museum and I took this photo of our river valley. I have been making a point of getting outside more at lunch time as the summer seems to fly by and this year I am making the most of every moment. I love the fresh air and seem to have a greater appreciation for the small things... like the amount of green trees and blue skies I see here.

Moving this rock into the backyard took some extra effort... it is the last of the backyard renos and is the water feature that makes me want to spend my entire evening near it... listening to the calming ripple of the water falling down it's sides.

Wedding number two was outside... It's the first outdoor wedding I have been to and it was an incredibly beautiful day... perfect really. Hubby actually took that photo of the releasing of the balloons while I was trying to take some with my DSLR (I had the wrong setting and captured nothing). I love this shot.

We have also been doing some convalescing... Sophie cat has had some long standing chronic issues that resulted in surgery... It's not easy keeping a cat kenneled but we managed to get through it and she is back to her normal self.

I am taking the Phone Photography Project at Big Picture Classes. It's been fun and the challenges are making me see things differently.

Last weekend we had a family gathering for my sister's  25th Anniversary and took some family photos... yep that's my brother in law, just keeping it real.

That's it friends! And how is your summer or winter fairing?

Happy Sunday | Sisters Spa Weekend

How has everyone's weekend been? We had a wedding on Friday and it has all passed so quickly... I will share some photos from the wedding another time... today I would like to share a few pictures from my sister's weekend at the Kingfisher Spa on Vancouver Island.

This is the first trip the four of us have ever taken away... all together! At the end, we agreed to do it again, perhaps every two years...

This was the lovely view we had from our walkout patio... glorious indeed. These are some of islands off the coast of British Columbia.
Many people from Alberta move to Vancouver Island, especially to retire. In talking with the ladies who gave me my spa treatments it is not surprising to hear them say they have no desire to leave the island. It is hard to not want to live here... the pace is certainly slower!
You can see the Canadian Rocky Mountains in the distance... There was mostly overcast skies for the majority of the trip, and on the last day when the sun was shining I didn't take a photo of the mountains! Ha Ha! I guess by that time I was so relaxed I was just soaking it all in!

We were staying in the "Eagle" room, which was so aptly named. There were eight bald headed eagles living at the resort and it was hard not wanting to take more photos, but after about 25 shots ... I decided to just enjoy them :)

It felt so good to get my big girl camera out and take these photos. I loved walking along the beach and seeing things in a different way... with a photographer's eye.

We did take a drive one day and stopped to see the Sea Lions...
They certainly look cute... but boy are they bossy! This one you can see basking in the sun would not let any other lion near his "spot"! When he decided to lay down he just pushed the guy off in front of him! When another lion would try to jump up, he would bark at them all... the noise sounded like "NO, NO, NO"! He looked like he was one of the elder Sea Lions so he was quite comfortable.

That is it for now... I will share more photos again... I'm sure you would like to see the food I ate! Right? In the meantime... here is one last photo of us settling into the room.

Do you have regular trips with your siblings and with out the spouses if there are any?

Take care friends!

Here Comes the Sun

I am very happy to see Friday again! This has been a busy week with shopping for outdoor chairs, hair cuts and colours and cleaning out the garage for the final stage of our yard renovations.

At National Scrapbooking Weekend I managed making a couple layouts. Here is one that's sure to get your sunny weekend going!

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Storytelling Sunday 3 | May 2013

This is the third year of Storytelling Sunday where Sian over at From High in the Sky has many of us sharing stories of all kinds on the first Sunday of the month. This year she we are sharing those items which are precious to us and would be hard to part with. You can see the details here on her blog.

Over a week ago when I came home from work, the first thing I did was change out of my work clothes, I made a pot of coffee, grabbed my camera and sat outside in the peace of our backyard. The temperature gauge reading +22 C.

We have been under what feels like a long Winter spell... almost 6 months of it...

Even with the warmness of the day the snow is still trying to cling onto the last bits of frozen ground. You can see it there at the edge of the fence.

When the weather changes and warmer temperatures are had, there is quite a bit of exploring to do.

But really I think we all have the same thoughts...

That sun sure feels good!

Right now the feeling of the warmth on my skin and the sun in my eyes are what's precious...

Today I'm making the most of my day. It's suppose to be sunny and +24 C. That sounds like perfect BBQ weather to me!

Take care friends!

Thank you for stopping by and having a read! If you would like to see other stories shared at From High in the Sky, then do pop by Sian's blog and have a look.

A Cup of Tea...

Once a month, Abi over at Creating Paper Dreams, has invited us to come sit and have a cup of tea.  It provides us a time and place to share with each other what is happening in our day to day life.

If you were to come over and share a cup of tea with me I would invite you into my home and we would sit in the front room and depending on the weather… we may even sit outside on the patio.

I would likely start by telling you I have three family weddings coming up in the next few months and all of them are on Marvin’s side. I would tell you, I have been asked to “take some candid shots” at my brother in laws dinner which is in 3 weeks, and I would ask if you had any tips on using an external flash. I then would laugh and admit I’ve not used mine before. It doesn't even have a battery in it and I have owned it for almost two years!

I would tell you I started a new job before Christmas as a manager and I would share this was something I never thought I would have done in my career, but that I am enjoying it very much. I would share part of the reason I made this leap is because I am concerned with the impending retirement of our baby boomers and the challenges this presents with succession planning. I want to be closer to our front line staff and encourage them and help facilitate change. I see so many postive things every day and it's makes me proud.

I would tell you I am looking forward to this weekend because it is National Scrapbooking Day weekend and I am planning to crop with my sister in law and a few good friends! I would share with you what projects I am currently working on. My “this is me” album is something I started just a month ago from a class I was taking at Studio Calico. I would tell you it has given me a good push to record some of my childhood stories! I would also share with you my Project Life album and although I am now 5 weeks behind, the intention is to catch up this weekend.

Lastly, I would share how excited I am for my upcoming sister’s trip to Vancouver Island, where we will spend 4 days at a spa, having daily treatments. This is our first trip the four of us have ever taken together! We are all looking forward too it and I cannot wait to take some photos of the seaside.

If you would like to see more posts from others, or participate, stop by Abi's. Her linky is still open.

Have a wonderful night my friends :)

A bit of this and that...

Hello there! Yikes! It is almost May and we are waiting for Spring like temperatures. It's  still very cold (-1C) and it doesn't help that I can still SEE snow on my front lawn as I am typing this! No matter, the sun is shining and it is high in the sky... and that is a good thing!

Life has been good and busy! We have been visiting with fiends and family, working very hard and of course there has been scrappy time and for that I have a few layouts to share with you!

This one I made for Treasured Memories as one of their guest designers. I nearly flipped when I saw these MME papers and embellishments Nadine gave me. The bright colours and fun brads... not to mention the journaling cards work well for those doing project life, needless to say it got me excited!

I got together with some former colleagues and friends for dinner at Earls. I had these Glitz Design papers for a few weeks and had been itching to use them. I absolutely love the pretty shades and patterns. I just started using those little enamel dots and now I'm totally addicted! Can't buy enough of them!

Here is one more for you... using Studio Calico's Neverland Kit... where I live there has been a restriction on how tall the buildings can  be due to our city airport, but recently this has changed as the airport is closing. I lived downtown for many years and although I do love having a house with a big back yard... I still have visions of living downtown overlooking our beautiful river valley!

That is it for me... this week I plan to post my Month In Numbers for March as I know May is coming!! I also plan to do a bit of blog reading and catching up with you :)
Take care my friends!

An Inspiration to See | Oprah

Hi All! I hope you are all doing well. I have been busy in my craft room and enjoying every minute of it!

I have a couple layouts here to share with you tonight. The first is of Oprah's visit in January. I took my sister Carmen with me and we could feel the vibe throughout the arena. It just happened when Oprah arrived in our fair city the temperature had dropped to some of the coldest Centigrades we had seen all Winter! She talked about how she had wanted to spend more time visiting Canada, but through her laughter she said we could have warned her! Yes Oprah, we know it's cold here but we are so thankful you visited and you can come back anytime!

This next layout I promised I would share. I did this for Treasured Memories (you can see more on their inspiration blog) as a guest designer. One thing I love about Instagram is all the cute hashtags created and #catsofinstagram is just one of millions.

That's it for now. I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week!

Pickled Shrimp | A Recipe

I posted this photo on Instagram and Jayne over at Paper Wool and Thread requested the recipe. I promised I would share!

It's a recipe from Canadian country singer Paul Brandt and was posted in one of the newspapers but, I'm sorry I don't know which one it was. Hubby likes to rip out recipes and try them and I'm thankful he did that with this because these are amazing shrimp!

Ingredients:
  • 1-2 bags cooked frozen shrimp
  • onions, sliced thinly
  • several  bay leaves
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp capers with juice
  • 2 1/2 tsp celery seed
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 6 drops Tobasco sauce
  • Juice of 2 lemons
Thaw shrimp under cool water and drain. Layer shrimp, onion and bay leaves in shallow dish. combine remaining ingredients and pour over shrimp. Cover and chill 24 hours.

A great appetizer for your next get together!

Month In Numbers | January 2013

Last year I attempted to do my "month in numbers" but I only managed one month! I have had to do some thinking on how I wanted to play this out and I think I have a sustainable plan. This is a new year and it will be a regular thing here on "Ginger's Life of Spice"! There I said it.. that's a commitment right?

If you are not familiar with Month In Numbers, you can head on over to Julie's blog where the MIN started.

Here is my layout.

and a closeup...
I tried to find a number of how much snow has fallen but wasn't able to... I just know it feels like enough already!

If you would like to see more Month in Numbers from other bloggers, Julie has a Pinterest page as well.

There you have it friends, my month (January) in numbers!
Have a fantastic evening!

What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday | 192

Welcome to another week of "What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday?" As you can see above, I have a little project I'm working on. We made a trip to Alaska last Fall and so this is the little mini album to commemorate the vacation. If you are interested you can see another photo up above in my header... we started in Vancouver.

Now, if you are really curious to see what else is on my work desk... I 'm not so shy.
I'm in a current state of disarray, because I'm expecting some new bookshelves to be delivered tomorrow... hence the piles, it is worse if you saw what's behind me :)

I will leave you with a photo of the finished layout of the sneak peak I shared on last weeks WOYWW!

I was asked to make some layouts with an inspiration kit (Echo Park papers, Doodlebug washi tape, Prima butterflies) from Nadine over at Treasured Memories. Thanks Nadine, I loved the kit! I will share the other two layouts in another post!

Thanks to Julia over at the Stamping Ground for hosting the WOYWW. If you would like to snoop at some other desks well then now is your chance!

Storytelling Sunday | February 2013

This is the third year of Storytelling Sunday where Sian over at From High in the Sky has many of us sharing stories of all kinds on the first Sunday of the month. She has us looking for those items of which are precious to us and would be hard to part with. You can see the details here on her blog.

When Sian had suggested we look for a precious item, initially I thought - I don't really have anything that I couldn't part with, except for all my photos and scrapbooking things. I moved so many times from when I was 16 up until 8 years ago when we bought our house that much of what I had collected over the years was thrown out or discarded. I also have a really bad memory for these kinds of things and will have to go searching under the crawl space sometime to see what is hiding down there that may actually be precious to me!

However; for this months take I did want to share some photos of my collection of dishes given to me from my grandmother.

I suppose these are precious to me in that I can still see my grandmother in her kitchen preparing dinner, opening the cupboards and pulling out these dishes. Many family dinners were eaten off of them.

She had several sets of dishes but I was partial to these and I told her so. They were given to me when I finished university and were kept in their box until we bought our house.
I do not have the full set as some pieces were broken before I received them. They rest in our cupboard with the glass doors to be looked at but are rarely used. Sometimes I think perhaps I should give them away, and maybe one day I will. For now I will continue to keep them and admire their simplicity and the memories they conjure.

Thank you for stopping by and having a read! If you would like to see other stories shared at From High in the Sky, then do pop by Sian's blog and have a look.

WOYWW | 191

This is my first "What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday", a meme started by Julia over at Stamping Ground. I've always been interested in seeing what others are working on so I thought I would give it a go.

I have a few layouts I'm making from a kit I received from Nadine at Treasured Memories. Hope to have them completed on the weekend!

Take care friends!

On Reading...

Reading books, whether fiction or non, has always played a role in my day to day life. However, when I started scrapbooking the act of reading started to dwindle until last year when I made a concerted effort to make some changes and so far it's working.

I find it hard though to remember the books I've read in the past so I took inspiration from Nathalie's layout and documented my reads. I did this in my Project Life, but I wanted to make one final layout with some thoughts and comparisons on my year of reads.

I had fun making this layout and will do it again after I finish my books from this year. For those of you, like my friend Lisa , (who read something like 70 books last year!), rather than making a layout, you might like to make a mini album.

Have a wonderful Monday!

Storytelling Sunday Three | Remember When...

Here we are, starting a third year of Storytelling Sunday where Sian over at From High in the Sky has many of us sharing stories of all kinds on the first Sunday of the month. She has switched it up a bit and you can see the details here on her blog.

My story is short and I happen to have a layout that goes with it.

I had these photos from a recent dinner at the "King and I" and as I was looking at them several random memories came to mind, all of which were of different occasions. I captured a few of them on this layout.

The journaling reads something like this:

First photo - Remember when... they were located on the other side of Calgary Trail, a much smaller location, more of a mom & pop style of decor. After the fire back in 1997 they moved to 107 Street where now they are a much larger restaurant.

Second photo - The first time I ate at the King & I, was with Carmen and Brian - I loved it! Needless to say it soon became a family favourite! I can remember taking Curtis once and he enjoyed it too!

Third photo - Marvin surprised me by taking me here for a birthday dinner. I had turned 26 and it was our third date - he knew I loved it! I even remember what I wore, black strappy heels, black linen shorts and a white linen top. We walked to the Fringe after dinner and watched a few outdoor plays.

I do have one other memory - rather it is the one Marvin recollects most and I would rather forget! There was another time we were leaving the restaurant and I was carrying the "doggie bag" with my other arm wrapped around his. We were walking on the sidewalk towards our vehicle and again... I was wearing high strappy heels... you know where this is going right?  Well, I tripped on a crack and as Marvin describes it... "you did a pirouette and managed to not fall or drop the food!"

That my friends is my contribution to Storytelling Sunday this month! Thank you for stopping by and having a read.

Please have a gander at more of the stories for this month over at From High in the Sky!
